Tech Round-up: 12/24/12-12/28/12

Here are some of the technology stories that caught our eye this week:

McAfee published its 2013 threat predictions report. The company expects an increase in ransomware attacks.

Symantec warned that writers of the Trojan.Ransomlock.G, aka Reveton, ransomware are threatening to wipe infected hard drives if owners don’t pay a $300 ransom. Symantec, however, discovered no disk-wiping capability in the malware’s code.

CNET listed desktop-focused attacks as one of four 2012 security trends that will also impact 2013.

The news site also reported that Microsoft’s Craig Mundie planned to step down as chief research and strategy officer. Mundie will serve as senior advisor to the CEO until he retires in 2014.

Amazon Web Services released a new cloud storage instance for data-intensive applications called High Storage Eight Extra Large.

ZDNet asked experts for their 2013 IT predictions. VMware’s Allwyn Sequeira expects to see a shift towards software-defined data centers accelerate next year.

Citrix shared mobility predictions with VMblog, including that BYOD will hit mainstream, but enabling mobility will be about more than just the mobile device.

Finally, InfoWorld reported on the shift from owning to outsourcing data center space.
