VMware Horizon Workspace Review

by on May 17, 2013

VMware Horizon Workspace debuted this past February 2013.  I recently setup Workspace within Gotham’s lab and wanted to share my notes.

What is VMware Horizon Workspace?

Horizon Workspace is part of the VMware Horizon Suite that also includes View and Mirage, along with ThinApp, which is part of each Horizon component.  Workspace provides a front-end portal or workspace for end users to access View desktops, ThinApp applications, data shares and access to SaaS based applications.

What does the Horizon Workspace consist of?

Horizon Workspace is a downloadable .OVA file, once imported and configured Workspace consists of a vApp with 5 virtual machines.  They are the following:  Gateway, Configurator, Service, Connector, and Data.  The vApp consumes approximately 500 GB of space.

Installation and Configuration

The installation was fairly straightforward. There isn’t much documentation out there since the product is still fairly new. The installation guide provides requirements, and of course, should be read before installing the system. At a high-level you will need (5) static IP addresses along with an IP Pool configured within vCenter. The configuration is wizard-driven; map out the requirements prior to the configuration as per the installation guide.

Once configured, you administer the Workspace vApp by launching the Horizon Configuration via a browser. From there you can configure access to the existing View environment, ThinApp applications, data shares and SaaS based applications. Each one is a module that has a separate configuration.

Summary

VMware’s first version of Workspace is a great start to providing users with a central site to access their data, applications and desktops. VMware’s competition in this space would be Citrix Cloud Gateway, which provides many of the same features.  Overall the solution was straightforward to setup, however I believe adoption overall will be slow like any other version 1.X product. The future looks promising as competition between two companies (VMware and Citrix) can only benefit the end users.
