by on May 22, 2013

Here are some of the technology stories that caught our eye today:

VMware announced details on their new vCloud Hybrid Service this afternoon. The IaaS offering is built on vSphere, which extends VMware software, features, and certified applications and OSes on- and off-premises, and maintains interoperability with existing virtualized infrastructure. vCloud Hybrid Service will be available through an Early Access Program in June, and officially released in the third quarter of this year.

HP’s Art Gilliland, head of security for HP, believes that companies should shift their focus from blocking hackers from getting into their systems, to being able to spot them when they do break in. Gilliland believes big data innovations, like columnar databases and MapReduce, can help spot irregular activities and stop an attack before any data is stolen.

Blue Coat announced this morning that they have acquired Solera Networks, a provider of big data security intelligence and analytics. “Retrospective capture and analytics are now an essential component of modern security architecture, and Solera has pioneered this field, creating a DVR for the network that records traffic and allows customers to easily mine that information,” said Greg Clark, CEO of Blue Coat Systems.

Lee Aylward of Ars Technica celebrates the tenth birthday of memcached, a key-value store created by Brad Fitzpatrick of LiveJournal, that has become integral in keeping web sites functional.

Juniper announced the first two components of their Junos Network Analytics suite, working with Guavus to release BizReflex and NetReflex. BizReflex provides network analytics and allows IT to see how customers use the network and charge them accordingly. NetReflex provides traffic trends and analysis.
