Here are some of the technology stories that caught our eye today:

Ed Bott at ZDNet spent some time using this summer’s Windows 8.1 update, and says that the changes go beyond the return of the Start button.

Riverbed announced that its Whitewater cloud storage appliance products now support integration with Savvis Symphony Cloud Storage. Companies with Whitewater appliances can now choose to use Savvis as a cloud storage location.

A critical vulnerability found in the Ruby on Rails framework can be used to take over servers and join them in a botnet. The server is infected with software that uses IRC protocols to send commands and malicious code to the servers in the botnet.

Cisco plans to buy JouleX, and hopes to integrate JouleX’s network energy monitoring software with their EnergyWise energy-management protocol.

Federal prosecutors filed an indictment against Liberty Reserve, a Costa Rica-based currency exchange accused of helping cybercriminals launder more than $6 billion. The indictment states that “Liberty Reserve has emerged as one of the principal means by which cyber-criminals around the world distribute, store and launder the proceeds of their illegal activity.”
