Citrix AppDNA included with XenApp FP2 and XenDesktop 7

by on July 12, 2013

Citrix recently announced the availability of AppDNA for Citrix XenApp 6.5 FP2 and Citrix XenDesktop 7 Platinum customers.  Customers that are on platinum can download AppDNA 6.3 today.  However, there is a big gotcha: the version provided with the Platinum licensing provides a slimmed down version of the AppDNA solution.

Difference in Versions

The version provided with the Platinum license (XenApp/XenDesktop), referenced as the limited edition, only provides the ability to target Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012 based systems (XenApp Hosted/TS).  There are two additional versions of AppDNA (Standard and Enterprise).  The main features not included in the limited edition of AppDNA are Desktop, Web-based applications, App-V or XenApp streamed analysis along with 64-bit testing, and Production Manager.  The XenApp streamed analysis is somewhat ironic since that is no longer supported with XenDesktop 7.

In any event, going back to the limited edition of AppDNA, you still have the ability to run applications through AppDNA to analyze if they will be compatible with XenApp 6.5 FP2/XenDesktop 7 App Edition on Windows 2008 R2 and/or Windows 2012.  This is awesome considering many of our customers run hundreds of applications in legacy environments and manually testing these applications for XenApp would take significant time.  AppDNA provides the R.A.G. (red, amber, green) report, also known as the Estate View, which provides a graphical representation of application compatibility.  The real benefit is for those applications that are not compatible with Windows 2008 R2/2012, AppDNA will provide remediation steps for the applications to work with those targeted operating systems.  Another tool the limited version provides is the Effort Calculator which can assist in budgeting for application remediation in migrating to the target system.  For more information on the Effort Calculator review the following eDoc http://support.citrix.com/proddocs/topic/dna-63/dna-forward-path-effort-calc.html.

Overall the AppDNA solution should be considered when migrating applications to different target operating systems. In the case of AppDNA Limited, Citrix made a great decision by including it for Platinum customers, although it is the scaled down version.  For any desktop transformation project, Gotham recommends the Enterprise edition given the additional features.
