NetScaler 10.5 – Should I Upgrade?

by on January 2, 2015

NetScaler 10.5 has been out for a while now, and we have been standardizing on the new version with success. But, what’s new in 10.5? Is it worth upgrading my NetScalers?

There are over 100 new features in version 10.5, but here are a few notables:

1) NO JAVA – OK, so there is still some Java. But, it is very much out of the way of day-to-day activities. This is a welcome treat for sure which makes administration much easier from any machine without going through hoops. That being said, I am sure the GUI will continue to be optimized as I feel some things take too many clicks at the moment. But the newer HTML5 interface is a huge step in the right direction.

2) Better End Point Analysis – 10.5 adds support for the OPSWAT end-point scanning libraries. This makes creating policies for EPA a few clicks, and also adds many new vendor products. This can be used for both pre-authentication and post-authentication.

3) Better Wizards – The wizards for XA/XD and XenMobile are much better. Traditionally I would skip these and configure everything manually. The newer wizards are more reliable and customizable making it work more often than not.

4) New Monitors – Monitors are now available for the XenMobile components including the Device Manager (XDM) and NetScaler Connector (XNC).

5) MobileStream – This new feature offers a 5x improvement in mobile app performance. It handles network connectivity issues and better leverages multiple networks simultaneously (cell and wireless).
